Great News!   We are pleased to announce the  release of Media Composer v8.6 (Mac and PC) .  This update is now available from My Avid Master Accounts, Application Manager, and the Avid Download Center (login and password required) as of Thursday, June 30th @ 3:00 PM ET.

New in this Release:

  • Source Browser: The Source Browser allows you to navigate to and import or link your file-based media from a single window. You can also preview your file-based media in the Source Browser window before you commit the clip(s) into a project.
  • Native Support for Panasonic AVC-LongG: Media Composer now provides native support for the Panasonic AVC-LongG format. With the latest Panasonic Plugin, you can now link to, playback, consolidate, and create native AVC-LongG media – and at faster speeds than previous releases. Supported formats include Panasonic AVC Long-GOP G12, G25 and G50 for project formats 720p/50, 720p/59.94, 1080i/50 and 1080i/59.94.
  • Audio Ducking: Quickly and easily create an audio mix by automatically reducing the audio level of one or more audio tracks against other audio track(s) –  like “ducking” the volume of music or natural sound under dialog, and then ramping it back up again.
  • New Ways to Select Segments in Timeline: Using new menu selections, quickly select multiple segments in the Timeline based on clip color, same local color, no color, offline clips, to the left or right of the Blue Bar or reverse the selection.
  • Create Sequence Based on Timeline Selection: Create a new sequence based on selections made in the current Timeline.
  • Nested AudioSuite Effects: Stack AudioSuite effects and step in and out to manipulate each individual effect – just like with video effects.
  • Audio Grouping: Set up groups of Audio Tracks in the Audio Mixer for better organization and to save screen real estate.
  • Default Pan: Sequences created entirely in Media Composer v8.6 or later will have pan information on every clip, so that when moving this sequence to another user’s workstation, it will play with the same pan that it was created with..
  • SMPTE Channel Order: Set 5.1 and 7.1 surround audio tracks to display in SMPTE order rather than ProTools order.
  • RED Plug-in Update: The latest RED plug-in (v1.16.5) takes full advantage of GPU acceleration. Some instances of editing with RED footage are now 4 times faster. Make sure you download the latest RED plug-in.
  • Export with Mask Margins: You can export your sequence with mask margins burned in, either through Export to File or AMA Export.
  • Timeline Clip Comments in Timecode Generator: Updates to the Timecode Generator to allow Clip Comments to appear on screen during playback.
  • Updates to DNxIO: With the release of Blackmagic Design Desktop Video 10.7, the Artist | DNxIO now supports capture of Closed Captions, capture to DNxHR HQX and 444, and Passthrough for Audio Punch-In. It also includes a number  of bug fixes and improvements.
  • and more!
Fixed in this Release:  Included in this update are a number of bug fixes, including:

1. You might have received an “Assertion failed” error when capturing compressed resolutions to a 25p project.

2. In some instances, after rendering sequences, the bin size increased noticeably. This has beenfixed.

*** Important Note: Due to this fix, if you take a bin that contains effects that have been rendered on a Media Composer v8.6 system and move it to a system prior to v8.6, most video effects above V1 and nested effects may be unrendered

3. You might have received an “assertion failed” error when creating an EDL in the List Tool from a sequence containing mixed frame rates.

4.  You might have received a “failure to open stream on bin” error when launching Media Composer in a shared storage environment.

5.  When exporting a QuickTime movie, the rendered AudioSuite effects were written to the local drive instead of an ISIS workspace.

6.  If a sequence contained media from a Canon device, you could not export the sequence to an XDCAM device. You must enable the “Re-encode for XDCAM bitstream compliance” option in the XDCAM export settings dialog in order for this to work.
