Consolidate & the option 'Delete only media created with the selected clip or clips'

Hi,

I'm confused as to what the option 'delete only media created with the selected clip or clips' does with reference to our consolidate process in the last stages of our workflow.

First off, I should mention that our Interplay environment (3.1.2) does not use Dynamic relinking - which is deactivated. However - in the manual (yes, I'm in the process of reading it Yes) it mentions that consolidated clips also inherit a 'dynamic' linked status, as subclips do too. Sometimes after heavy production, consolidate failures, and sequences that won't check in, we have a messy battlezone of checked in masterclips and bins in Interplay, and we end up having to delete everything in Access and check the whole thing in again. I guess this leads to unrepresented database assets that remain in the database somewhere??

When we delete in Access before checking everything in again, we move everything to garbage, remove reservations and delete metadata. We do not delete these representations from the orphaned section while we have online media in the master project - maybe we should find these database assets and delete the metadata at this point?

So to the main problem - when finally deleting orphaned clips when the master project is deleted and only the consolidated project remains, sometimes there is a big difference if I choose to delete orphan 'clips' with or without the option checked. Without the option checked there can be up to 10X more associated media data to delete than with it checked. However - there may only be a couple of thousand 'representations' in the orphan list, but there can be 10 or 20 times that amount of 'associated media files' on several workspaces that Interplay finds with the option unchecked. Our house policy is to keep it checked, as we have had offline problems when deleting orphans with the option unchecked (I am told). As yet I cannot get a clear answer from anyone here, as to what might be responsible for offline files in sequences currently in production or why these files end up in orphaned without a reservation. Nobody here seems to know why this happens, and I can see that there are over 100.000 orphan clips in kept media - all kinds of media, all without reservations - some of them many years old.

We have over a thousand projects in production and our general workflow is that we link to various AMA formats & transcode, we also ingest XT3 EVS, we delete AMA master clips, edit (subclips may be created), we post in symphony & protools, then consolidate, delete metadata and then finally delete the orphaned media and assets when the Master project and all reserved assets to the master are gone.

I believe that we do not have a custom scheduled delete, and we obviously do not have the default schedule activated, so I assume that this is why the assets are kept - waiting to be manually deleted, as they obviously are links that reference online media files - problem is - I don't know for sure that I can delete this media or why we even have it in kept?
