Matte Key Effect Voodoo

Hi Everyone, thank you in advance,

I am having to step into a project that another editor had finnished to make a few changes to graphics. I am working on a HP Z820 workstation in avid MC 8.4.4 with nitis.

My problem is that many of the graphics that I need to replace have an effect on them that I am unable to replicate. There is an animation that acts as a transition between two segments of the piece and it has a matte key effect on it with absolutely no keyframes or any of the check boxes or perameters moved, it is completely default. So I began with placing the new animation overtop of the old one and adding a matte key effect and made sure that the effect was the same as the old one and then overwrote the old animation. well it doesn't work at all.

It looks like the other editor (who isn't around to ask) took the original animation and animated it more inside avid, he basically made it wipe on to the screen. I went back and looked at the old animation file and it is exactly like the new one except for the word changes. So I know that the wipeing happening in the timeline was done in avid not with the original file and I found what looks like a saved matte key preset in a bin, but is actually a stand alone movie file that has the wipping included with the old animation, which again confirms to me that the wipping was done in avid.

It looks like a saved preset effect like when you create an effect and then grab the icon of the effect from the top of the effect editor and drag it to a bin except it is a movie. and it says "Matte Key: title of the original clip (With Alpha)"

So if anyone has any idea how this other editor accomplished this I really need to know. cause I have been looking and am baffled.

thanks again!
