TaggedValues in AMTv3

Hi,

Has anyone had any success with adding TaggedValues (ie UserComments) to a MAD that would then be in the exported AAF and MXF OP-Atom files?

It seems that in the MediaAssetDescription.xsd that this is possble - however I can't get it to work - (seems like it's just ignored) - using 4.4.23.10046 on Windows and macOS - so wondering what I could be doing wrong

Thanks

NEED OUTPUT HELP

QUESTION:  HOW DO YOU OUTPUT FROM AVID A QUICKTIME MOV WITH 4 AUDIO CHANNELS *NOT* USING SAME AS SOURCE?

Using Avid 8.6 and Mavericks OS (I know...old).

Sequence and all footage is Pro Res 422 native.  No mixed resolutions anywhere in it.

So I am trying to output a QT MOV with 4 audio channels.  Every time I output with "Same As Source" and DIRECT OUT, my video 3D moves tear.  When I switch to CUSTOM and use the Pro Res 422 option, single field, it does NOT tear.  BUT... I can't output that way because DIRECT OUT is GRAYED OUT.  It only gves me stereo 2 track audio.

What I've tried:  ALL WITH SAME AS SOURCE OUTPUT since I need 4 tracks of audio:

Mixing down to a different resolution.

Outputting with a different flavor of output.

Tried outputting in CUSTOM with surround sound (still only gives 2 tracks of audio.

The common denominator is the SAME AS SOURCE setting.  EVERY TIME I output with it, it tears.  Attached are shots of what I am talking about.

Any help would be great!  The Avid tech guys emailed me back saying to switch to CUSTOM and select DIRECT OUT, but it is grayed out.  I tried switching the audio output in the project to DIRECT OUT from STEREO but it STILL is grayed out (that only monitors the audio I believe).

 Media Composer 2018.12.3 – Launching 4.2.19 @ 12:00 Noon

Avid is releasing Media Composer 2018.12.3 today, Tuesday, April 2nd, 2019 @ 12 PM EDT to address several issues.

Location at Launch: Updates to Media Composer (subscription and perpetual), and Media Composer | Ultimate will be released at the same time, and will be made available from Avid Master Accounts (MyAvid), Avid Link, and the Avid Download Center (login and password required).

What is fixed:  The issues Media Composer 2018.12.3 addresses are:

- Bug Number: MCCET-2892. In some instances, playback would stop after adding an Audio Mark IN/OUT.

- Bug Number: MCDEV-10686. Clicking on the checkbox for “Enable Mask Margin” or “Include Inactive Audio Tracks” in the AAF export dialog did not enable the options.

- Bug Number: MCCET-2772. Clips may not have updated properly if you batch imported with Dynamic Relink enabled.

- Bug Number: MCCET-2895. On some systems, the memory usage would increase until the editing application became sluggish.

Limitations in this release:

- Bug Number: MCDEV-8641. (AMD Graphics). Systems with AMD graphics cards might display tearing when performing Full Screen playback.

Bug Number: MCDEV-9460. Windows 7 systems with Nvidia Maxwell or Nvidia Pascal cards might experience playback issues that could result in “Play Consumer timeout” errors. WorkaroundSelect “Disable GPU Effects” in the Render Settings dialog box.

- Bug Number: MCDEV-9269. (Media Composer | Cloud) After performing a remote download operation on a sequence containing AVC-I 100 remote media, the downloaded media appears as XAVC-I 100. Workaround: Download the entire master clips.

- Bug Number: MCDEV-9011. Intermittently, when working with the XDCAM Nablet Plug-in, you might see “Failed to get the sample position from the AMA Plug-in” errors if you have waveforms enabled in the Timeline.

- Bug Number: COGS-2560. While working in the Script Window, text operations (cut/copy/paste/delete/editing) can only be done in edit mode. See “Editing a Script” in the Help.

Load a sequence into the Source Monitor request

Avid Soft MC 5.0.3.7r on 2.66 Mac Pro Quad / 8gb ram / OSX Snow Leopard

Really excited about the features coming out on MC. MC has always been my NLE of choice. I love how much I can keep my fingers on the keyboard and how rich the fine-cutting features are. One of the features that still always requires me to leave the keyboard for the mouse is with sequence-to-sequence editing. Like many editors, I keep my dailies, selects, pulls, etc in a particular sequence in a particular bin. What bothers me is that if I double click on the sequence in the bin, it will always load the sequence in the composer. I have to manually drag the sequence across the monitors and drop in the Source Monitor. This dragging and dropping is the most inefficient part of my editing workflow. As far as I'm aware, Command+clicking a sequence in a bin is a duplicate function of just clicking it. I would like to command+click a sequence and have it open in the Source Monitor.

Again, I love all the major feature revisions and I realize my request is minor and only a fraction of editors take full advantage of "source/record toggling", sequence-to-sequence editing or lean so heavily on keyboard shortcuts. But for me, these features are where MC kills the competition. I fear that by becoming more mouse-centric i.e. the Smart Tools to compete with other NLE's and attract new editors from those mouse-heavy platforms, developers and editors alike are forgetting or not realizing that keyboard-centric editing is much faster and more efficient in time and energy and sequence-to-sequence editing is much more powerful than cut-and-paste. I like to think of editing on an Avid as editing with "both hands" as opposed to the other NLE's which in comparison feel like I have "one hand tied behind my back". I hope moving forward, the development team will continue to refine and enhance the finer tools of editing workflow as well as the broader workflow, codec support, etc. that is in its own right, keeping Avid on the top.

Thank you for considering my request.

Exception when transcoding RED 4K footage

$

HI,

I was on the forum last week and got good advice about workflow to transcode some 4K footage in a project that is HD and archive. I have been transcoding to ProRes with the other material. Unfortunately when a 4K clip's length is over about 6 minutes it stops and I got an error message Exception: AMAProducer Task::Execute: AMA Plug-In Unable to Provide Sample

So I reverted to exporting Prores.movs from Red CineX and then am now trying to transcode them into AVID. It takes absolutely ages and they are huge files, No error messages on importing these to AVID but this is transcoding twice isnt it?

Perhaps I should try to cut a short trailer AMA linking to the RED CINE X exports for a 5 minute trailer  - but I'm worried I wont be able to export at the end.

cheers,

Sarita

Which file name does Media Composer use for AAFs?

$

So I've found myself in a situation where a distributor would like an XML export of my MC sequence.

My planned workaround was to export an AAF from MC, import the AAF into DaVinci Resolve and export the XML from there.

However, a portion of the audio files are failing to relink, probably because they weren't properly named. So I figure I should be able to rename the files in order to get them to link correctly.

Does anyone know if AAF's using the Link To method, use the files Tape ID when relinking? Or the Tape Name?

Loop Selected Clips

Some odd behaviour here. When I go to the bin menu command 'loop selected clips', the first clip loads into the source monitor and begins to play as you'd expect. But it's when I hit 'tab' that the system goes bananas. Instead of skipping to the start of the next selected clip and playing from that point, 'tab' sparks off an endless and uninterruptable cycle through all selected clips. It's like some demented, disjointed flick-book. Surely I'm doing something wrong here? I've used this laptop for AXP for almost 2 years without a single issue (lucky me) so I'm sure I'm missing something desperately obvious. Any ideas guys?

Location at Launch: Updates to Media Composer (subscription and perpetual) will be released on the Avid Download Center (login and password required) only.

Installer/Patch:  Installing the Editing Application:  The Windows version of Media Composer v2018.12.4 is a patch release. You must have v2018.12.3 already installed. Then use the 2018.12.4 patch to update to this release.

What is fixed:  The issues Media Composer 2018.12.4 addresses are:

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2822. In some instances, the .mxf extension was not appended using Send to Export, therefore “Auto Launch” could not open mxf files.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2927. Intermittently, saving bins resulted in Exception errors.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2902. In some instances, a video mixdown included the effects from an upper nested layer.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2897. After importing, certain WAV files may have had an incorrect start time.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2748. If a sequence with media from a P2 card was loaded into the Source or Record monitor, relinking to add an extra clip would take too long.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2867. In some instances, rendering some effects on linked H264 media resulted in mixed up frames.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2862. (Windows 10) The Audio Tool was not updating when scrubbing with CAPS lock enabled.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2937. In some instances, if you captured with a single track that was not A1, the capture would abort immediately.

-  Bug Number: MCDEV-10869. Clicking the yellow bin lock icon maximized bins that were minimized.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2967. (Avid Artist DNxIO and DNxIQ) Audio meter levels were not displayed in the Audio tool when recording.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2952. The Audio Punch-In Tool did not remember the last bin selected.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2914. In some instances, when exporting JPG, if you changed the name of the export, the file may have been unusable.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2942. You could not perform an insert edit export of DNxHR HQX media.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2946. (Interplay) In some instances, Media Composer would crash during check-in of sequence.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2910. Importing a non-shared user profile created a duplicate and prevented the application from closing.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2913. The Property Merge window would inadvertently appear when checking in a clip for first time into Interplay.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2901. Media Composer would hang when playing back an Avid Titler + title in the effect editor.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2729. You might not have received the correct find results when searching group clips in PhraseFind.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2931. After upgrading from Media Composer v2018.12.1 to v2018.12.2 or v2018.12.3, batch re-import of Matte Key clips was not working.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2878. The UHD video output is converted to HD when consolidating HD media in a UHD project.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2859. Switching camera angles in Multicam stopped playback if the group contained mixed frame rates.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2857. If you were working on a system using Chinese locale, you might have experienced consolidate and transcode audio issues.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2957. Insert Edit Export failed if only video tracks were selected.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2966. You might have been unable to import an EDL.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2915. The metadata might have been incorrect after importing an ALE.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2841. Saved presets did not always retain the last keyframe.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2805. The Raster Dimension column in a bin was incorrect for thin raster media.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2925. In some cases, after performing a render operation, the green dot remained in the Timeline on PNG clips including a Matte Key effect.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2930. You might have seen performance issues when editing a long AVC Long GOP 25 clip.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2973. Changes to Audio Reference Level settings changes were not properly reflected when you switched between Normal and Narrow Mixer View.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2960. (Mac v10.14.x) When linking to media on a shared network drive, the UNC path in the Drive column might have had the network user name in the path.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2732. When consolidating AVC Long GOP subclips created new master clips that were too long. A new check box has been added to the Consolidate/Transcode dialog boxes. Select the “Re-encode AVC Long GOP media to ensure shortest subclip durations” option when you consolidating AVC Long GOP subclips.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2923. (Mac) You might have received “not authorized” errors when trying to use PhraseFind or ScriptSync.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2947. You might have received errors when trying to set target the Dynamic Relink settings in an SD 25i PAL project.

-  Bug Number: MCCET-2936. If Dynamic Relink was enabled, imported DaVinci Resolve AAF media was offline.

Sometimes MC won't close

Every so often when closing MC, it gives an error message that it has encountered a problem and has stopped working.   I'll force MC to close with Windows Task Manager.  I don't lose any saved work, but it's annoying and there seems to be no cause & effect pattern dictating when and why this happens.

I've been using AVID for several years, usually without problems.

Suddenly however when I try to capture footage into Avid Media Composer, I get the following error:

exception: sys_error, OSErr:-5000

I have restarted everything etc.

Repaired disk persmissions as advised in another forum.

But same error keeps coming back.

I am not technically minded so anyone who can help, I will gratefully appreciate it, if you can explain what to do step by step...

(I make films on complex issues so am not so stupid in other ways)

Thank You!

dual 1Gb connection - client to Isis 5500 question

I have a Nexis and have one of my macpros connected via two 1Gb connections and it works great.  I didn't have to tell the Nexis server software or do anything to the switch (Netgear 1Gb/10Gb switch). All I did I was configure the client software properly and the OSX network prefs.

I am helping a friend that has an Isis 5500 and a Dell n2048 switch. We connected both of the macpro's nic ports to the Dell switch and configured the client software properly (checkboxed both nic connections). With the Nexis this is all I had to do and I was moving files at 180MB/s + and editing with more realtime tracks than I could previously.  On the Isis we're getting 110MB/s which is what one 1Gb connection should give me. We also can't play back the additional tracks we thought we'd be able to. Same model mac pro I'm using elsewhere with success. I don't recall the versions of the OS or MC at this time.

Is there something extra to do with an Isis 5500 to get dual 1Gb networking to one client system?

Thank you.

Relinking sequence to original AMA media

$

Hi everyone.  Having a little problem.

I transcoded an early  sequence on a project to 1/4 LB media.  Worked on the sequence until completion.  I'm trying to relink back to the AMA but it's just not happening.

I've followed the various guides and I can't figure it out.

Any suggestions for troubleshooting?

No matter what I do, it just stays linked to the proxy clips (which were a mix of original AMA linked subclips and their accompanying newly created 1/4 clips.

Thanks in advance.

Deleting log files?

Hi,

     I can't seem to find a good answer for this online. Is it okay to delete .log files from project folders on the Nexis? They are getting really messy and don't seem to serve any great purpose. Is there any way to stop them from appearing in the first place?

Relink 23.98 media to sequence cut in 24

$

0

There is a project shot in 24fps.  Editorial cut with 24fps dailies (Avid MXFs) in a 24fps Avid project.

Now, I have the same dailies, but they were converted through our transcoder to 23.98 Avid MXF.  The frame conversion was done "properly," keeping all frames so timecode matches between 23.98 and 24 flavors.

If Editorial hands me their Avid bin, I am having trouble relinking to my 23.98 dailies properly.

If I open their 24fps bin in my 23.98 project, and try to open their sequence, Avid will create a new 23.98 version of the sequence.  However, when it does that, it shifts the in and out timecodes in around a little in the new sequence, so the timecode ins and outs are sometimes 1-2 frames off.  So now when I relink to my 23.98 dailies, it is not frame accurate.

I believe Avid is converting the sequence to 23.98 incorrectly (or at least "not traditionally"); attempting to match the duration of the original piece by truncating frames, rather than maintaining the correct timecodes.

Anyone know how to fix this?

My current workaround is to open their 24p bin in a 24p project on my side, output an EDL, and bring that EDL in to a 23.98 project so that the timecodes remain the same.  Then it's fine.  But that's a lot of steps and I'm trying to avoid EDLs.

Also: As far as editorial working with 24 media and me working in 23.98 media, I have no choice. That's just the way our facility does things.

10&12 bit DNxHR HQ, SQ and LB: no luck

$

Hi,

I'm now using DNx SDK release 2.3.5.43.  Release notes for the 2.3.4 release say:

10/12 bit-depth support is added for DNX_HQ/DNX_SQ/DNX_LB (1272/1273/1274) compressions

However, the DNX_GetInfoFromCompressedFrame() never returns 10 or 12 in the depth field. :-(

I call DNX_CreateEncoder with the following:

(gdb) p compParams
$3 = {
  structSize = 64,
  width = 960,
  height = 720,
  compressionID = DNX_SQ_COMPRESSION_ID,
  colorVolume = DNX_CV_709,
  colorFormat = DNX_CF_YCbCr,
  subSampling = DNX_SSC_422,
  depth = 10,
  PARC = 0,
  PARN = 0,
  CRCpresence = 0,
  VBR = 0,
  alphaPresence = 0,
  losslessAlpha = 0,
  premultAlpha = 0
}

I encode a frame and immediately after I call DNX_GetInfoFromCompressedFrame() on the encoded frame and get:

(gdb) p compressedParams
$4 = {
  structSize = 64,
  width = 960,
  height = 720,
  compressionID = DNX_SQ_COMPRESSION_ID,
  colorVolume = DNX_CV_709,
  colorFormat = DNX_CF_YCbCr,
  subSampling = DNX_SSC_422,
  depth = 8,
  PARC = 0,
  PARN = 0,
  CRCpresence = 0,
  VBR = 0,
  alphaPresence = 0,
  losslessAlpha = 0,
  premultAlpha = 0
}

Is this a known issue?

Thank-you,

Help request for dynamic relink testing in MC 2018.12.3

$

Hi Guru's,

I could use some help from a few members in the community to test if they can reproduce an issue I encountered today with MC 2018.12.3. and dynamic relink. It might be that the issue only occurs in an interplay environment but I'm currently not able to test this on a standalone non interplay connected 2018.12.3 system. I hope to do so in the coming days.

What I would like to ask, especially those in an interplay environment, is if anyone of you can do a classic import of 3 or 4 different audio files from the same location and play those 3 or 4 master clips and confirm that all 3,4 different clips are playing normally. Now enable dynamic relink and play those 4 clips again. Do all 3,4 master clips all of a sudden play the same audio file?

At the site where we see this odd relink behavior of 2018.12.3 (it probably wrongly assigns the same source mob id to all clips) MC 2018.8 works as expected.

Thanks in advance.

Jeroen
