Audio Mixdown Issue

Hi 

we've been recently experiencing a very important issue when we create an audio mixdown from our final sequence.

We edit mainly news on location with laptops.

We normally have 3 audio tracks (mono - A1 interview sound bite - A2 natural sound - A3 voice over )

When we're about to export we duplicate this sequence using the Command D shortcut, then on this duplicated sequence an audio mixdown with audio tracks 1 and 3

The goal is to have a finished sequence with 1 video track, 2 audio mono tracks 

A1 the Mixdown of A1 and A3 

A2 Natural Sound

We've been doing this for years with previous versions of Media Composer, with no issues at all.

 

Now, since we upgraded our machines we have a new version of Media Composer 2019.12

This same workfow with audio mixdown is now creating some issues.

Basically when we do some sound edit on A1 and overlay video on the top this edit on A1, when the mixdown is created it clips out a few seconds of the original sound bite.

Please see the picture uploaded with the most recent example that I have experienced.

(I have tried to upload 2 .mov files with a playback from the sequence, but the upload system does not support .mov)

Consolidate Fails with Pink Clips

I can watch through my entire timeline with no problems, but because I linked some clips, I cannot consolidate my timeline.  I get errors about the formats not matching.  What's the easiest way to select a sequence, and re-encode all the pink clips that are causing me problems?

54.94 footage with audio recorded at 29.97

I have been doing a show for the last couple of years where my audio guy uses tentacle to place TC in one of our audio channels. This has worked great in the past but we were only shooting in 29.97. This year I decided to shoot in 54.94. When I get avid to read audio timecode it comes out 2x faster that the audio tracks timecode because I can only import the audio track at 29.97. Is there anyway around this past syncing by mark in?

 

Bugs and issues with avid 2020.4

Hi all Avid 2020.4 here are a few bugs that I'm encountered 

1. Trying to batch transcode (with keep original frame rate) files and after a few transcodes I'm receiving this error message. i've changed from UME link to quick time, still did the same thing, opened a project with the same FPS still did it. Picture included. 

Also it linked some files twice once in two different video links. 

2. When i mark a few clips in the bin and try to right click the marks disappear and only one file is marked. the only time that it works is if I keep pressing the shift on my keyboard while I press the right click. 

3. When i try to press on the color box and right click it doesn't give me the color but gives me the right click menu. Only when I press on another line in the bin and then return to the line it gives me the option.  

 

If you haven't insights about this bugs and how it can be avoided.

AMT3 Multi-process filename collisions

Hello,

I run into filename collisions when spawning multiple AMT3 processes writing to the same folder. ClipName and TapeName are the same for all targets.

- Isn't the filename generation supposed to be random?

- Is there a way around this problem?

I will start with the fact that I'm using a 32 ", 4K monitor, because it may matter.
I would like to signal two annoying inconveniences.
Every time I use Input -> Source Browser or Input Media a small window opens that I need to scale.Why Avid doesn't keep the size of this window after closing the AC.
A similar thing is with the Mode window, which always opens in the upper left corner and not where it was used.

Converting a DNx Mov to a pre-UME version on Mojave.

With my new Mac being Mojave only I am forced to export Quicktimes that require the new codec pack. 

How can I make a conversion (posibly using external software) to the older codec format so my clients can use my files? 

The conversion must again happen on my Mojave system.

Is this posssible?

2020.6 fix for longstanding linking problem on network shares?

With evey new release of Media Composer I cross my fingers that this problem is finaly resolved.  The issue is:

This is a known issue and was logged as bug MCCET-3207 | %20 is replacing spaces in UNC and NAS paths in the source browser.

The Engineering team is still working on a fix for this, I'll keep you updated with regards to its progress.

In the meantime, please use 2018.11 as it is the last known working version.


Has this been resolved in 2020.6?  I thought maybe with the new linking engine things might get fixed.  This is a major problem and I don't understand how it has been with the software for years now and it is still not addressed.  I really want to to upgrade to a more recent version of Media Composer, but this bug makes it impossible.  Any information on if and when this will be fixed would be grealy appreciated.

Hello,

minor thing but I think the shown shortcut under Windows/Settings is wrong. It is not cmd+= but shift+cmd+=.

Under File/Settings it is right.

My experience of MC 2019.12 is pretty stable except for one recurring error that crashes my system at least once a day.

I've been unable to pin down the exact cause but it seems to usually happen when scrubbing over clips with FrameFlex or Pan and Zoom effects applied. All my footage came in as UHD and I have the project knocked down to 1080p/25  

Is anyone experiencing the same and if so, any solutions? My currently solution is to force auto-save every 2mins so I don't lose everything once Media Composer goes into an unrecoverable crash

Hello.

Since 2020.4 Ive use the MOV with UME export. Today i updated to .6 and saddly my preset for UME is blank and there is no MOV to choose from the dropdown menu. Is it moved somewhere else or is it a bug?

Im adding the screenshot for my dropdown.

Titles in sequences created in 2020.5 or earlier are changing position in the frame in 2020.6. (inconsistent behavior)

Had to return to 2020.5 to avoid this problem.

Media Composer 2020.6 - FrameFlex issue (sort of continued from 2020.5)

The FrameFlex scaling issue is still not resolved in 2020.6. The issue has changed however and from what I was able to find out, the core of the problem lies in RGB->YUV conversion. From my latest response to Avid support:

After some more testing with various file formats (codecs) I found out that the issue is present only for RGB source clips (DNxHR444 or Prores4444), but not for any other YUV clips (DNxHR LB/SQ/HQ/HQX or Prores LT/422/HQ). This would indicate that the issue is probably related to RGB->YUV conversion in render process. I tried to switch the working space from YUV709 to RGB709 and the issue is gone for all clips/formats/codecs! So it looks the problem is only in RGB->YUV conversion, not the other way around, since all clips rendered correctly in RGB709 space (even YUV clips).

So after all those experiments the new issue report is very narrow - when using RGB DCI 2K scope source clips in YUV HD1080p timeline, the preview on the timeline looks fine, but as soon as I render the clips (or they are underlying part of the render in upper video levels), which involves RGB -> YUV conversion, the picture gets corrupted.

Hope this helps at least as a workaround for anyone facing the FrameFLex problem (it affects ALL of my DCI 2K exports linked to HD1080 projects...).

2020.4 and P2 plugin?

Anyone know if there is an issue with the Panasonic P2 plugin with Catalina and/or MC 2020.4? I could not link to volume although I could link to individual video files (no audio this way). Checking the Config window, the existing P2 plugin did not show up. I quit and removed it and reinstalled (v4.9.04 - supposed to be OK for MC 2019.8 and later). Still no good and it still does not show up in the MC Config list of plugins. Anyone?

Qualified OS says 10.15.x

 

Isi t safe to say 10.15.5/6 is good to go with 2020.06? 

 

 

Pro Tools/Media Composer Catalina Install

RE: Pro Tools/Media Composer Catalina Install on the same MAC Machine

I was wondering the versions which Avid are offering. If you are running Pro Tools and Media Composer on the same machine, either one or the other does not keep up with the MAC Version.

For Example

Media Composer 2020.6

OSX - 10.15.4

Pro Tools 2020.5

OSX 10.15.3 as in bracket's 10.15.4 not qualified on the Avid knowledhebase article.

So what is the best solution if running Catalina 10.15.3 and running both the above latest verions of Pro Tools and Media Composer on the same machine? What's the latest/safe version of Catalina that will satisfy Avid's testing and not impact on the user? As seems each Avid project is behind eachother, and then the user is waiting for catchup time between both Avid's software on the same computer.

Also the co-install says, any new verison you install, you un-install Media Composer and Pro Tools, then install Pro Tools, make sure to run/open Pro Tools first so it runs once. Then install Media Composer last in that order? I presume that's because Pro Tools/Media Composer is some how sharing the same plugins being made available inside both software?

Artist transport shift problem

Hi,

 

I haven't used my transport for a few months and now have a new mac so I thought I'd get it going again with media composer.

Downloaded and installed the latest driver and popped my archived settings on.

I've discovered that the shift key now has to be held down to access the commands mapped.  Previously one press would drop it into shift mode with the key illuminated.  Think of it like the difference between shift and caps lock on a regular keyboard.

I'd like it to lock in shift mode again.  Any suggestions?

2018.11 Live trim through mask still not fixed

When trimming through a mask effect on a higher video track (monitoring), the frames do not update live.  Once you stop trimming, the frames update.  If you move the monitoring button to a track below the mask, trimming live updates behave as expected.  This long standing bug (more than a year) occurs in software only and hardware IO modes.  Occasionally, it will work, often just after starting the application.

I have also noticed that the problem still happens even if the upper mask video track is turned completely off... Just the fact that the effect layer is there, even if it is inactive, stops the live update.  Also if the effect clip is 'muted', the problem still persists.  

In a related situation, if there is an unrendered effect on one of both of the clips that are being trimmed, for example a 'flop' (monitoring from that single video track), the effect will not play but reverts to the original clip without the effect.  However, in this instance the live update still works (but without the effect). If the effect has been previously rendered, the live trim woks as expected, unless you trim beyond the bounds of the render.

Trimming was always one of MC's best features and it's been messed up for a long time now.  Also the 'intelligent' gray trim rollers are rather dumb... They never trim where an editor would 'want' them to trim, but that's a whole other subject.

The good news is that 2018.11 seems to be very stable and responsive.  However, turning on waveforms still grinds the system to a halt if you have a full timeline with many tracks.

 

Will it ever remember my symphony license data?

Hi, I have two questions about Link 2020.

I use my license on a desktop and a laptop. I change between systems regularly. I am logged into my account on link.

For MC I get the option "use this license". For Symphony this never shows up. I always have to copy it in. Of course I can do this but I don´t see the point of the whole software then.

Is there a way to make it stick?

Second question - is there a way to speed Link up? It always needs to think everything over for a few minutes before remembering anything, without even saying that it is still loading. So basically it opens up empty and populates products and licenses after some arbitrary amount of time. How to get donglespeed? Ideally I would want to be (and stay!) logged in and be able to manage licenses in a few clicks and seconds, not many minutes. Not spend the time copying serial numbers like its 1999 and typing logins and passwords every other time. Unfortunately I have to type the password almost always, no idea why.
