Bizarre message consolidating subclips

$

I have been consolidating subclips for more years than I care to remember. Recently (not sure quite which version), I get the following very odd message when consolidating (not transcoding) subclips with 'Delete original media when done' selected.

I have carefully tested this and both the first two options do exactly the same thing. New master clips and media are created, as I'd expect and the original media is deleted. All we actually need here is a warning about deletion. What gives?

MC 8.8.5, Mac but seen on earlier versions.

Error upon export: errcode: 4294965262

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone has a thought on a strange error I'm getting when trying to export an H264 10kbps Quicktime in a 1920x1080 23.976p project in Avid MC 6.5.4.2.  The message is:

"Exception: Movie export from procedures FAILED!, errcode:  4294965262"

I tried divide and conquer to rule out corrupt media, and both halves of the sequence, in separate timelines, exported under the same export parameters with no problem whatsoever.  The timeline is about 86 minutes long.  The error on the full timeline export came at about 80% in, (at 01:52:32 of 02:19:10).

I saw in another post that the presence of AMA clips caused it for them, so I weeded out the few AMA clips in the sequence.  There are now none, and I re-did the full export of the timeline and the same error message appeared.  I can't report if it happened at the same position in the export.  It may or may not have.  All media in the timeline should be a flavor of DNX, at 23.98fps.

All effects, video and audio, had been rendered.

Disk Utility repair had been run on the media drives before the 2nd failed export.

I can successfully run a video mixdown to Dnx36 on the entire sequence.

So I'm a little puzzled at the moment.  Since each half can export fine, is there some kind of hardware limit I'm reaching?  I have been exporting even longer 89 minute sequences for months on the same machine.

The machine is a Mid 2010 Mac Pro tower:

2 x 2.66 Ghz 6-core
32GB 1333 DDR3 ECC RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB GPU
OS X 10.8.5

The media reside on 3 x 4TB GTech external drives connecting via FireWire800 (one is connected via USB 2), but this has been the case for a year with no problems.

Any thoughts that anyone might have would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance!

Rolling end title movement is blurry

I have an age old problem with titles.
Is ther a way to get rid of the blurrines of the rolling end credits with Avid? (I don't have After Effects)
I used title tool and picture file with pan/zoom from photoshop - same result.
I understand, that it is due to the font sice and the speed of pixels moving accross the screen.
I would not like to change the font size. I slowed the roll down as much as I could, but that did not help.
Is the formula to calculate the right speed anywhere available?

Hi!  New to forums and the AVID community.  I am not tech savvy by any stretch - but looking to get educated!!  I am trying to figure out if I can download the 30 day trial - but a bit concerned that I may not understand the requirements fully enough to run it smoothly.   This is what I have - will it be enough?

7.0.4 AMPI Sub System Error

$

I posted this on the Avid FB group, but I finally got connected to the forums so I will post here as well.

I am installing an old version of MC at home to be on the same version as the post house I am working with. (MC 7.0.4). Avid support won't help me since it is so old. It is not launching due to iLok PACE drivers not installed and it sends me to the iLok website. I install the license manger and it doesn't help. I tried copying the PACE kext from my MC 8.9.1 partition and that doesn't work either. It gives me an AMPI Sub System Error on launch while trying to initialize audio plugins. I even tried removing all audio plugins and it didn't help either. I ran Disk First Aid and I also made sure the HD had permissions set Read/Write. Anyone remember this solution? HELP

Symlinks and Media Tool

$

Hello,

I'm trying to create symlinks in the Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1 folder on my system that point to dailies media delivered in a bunch of subfolders.

If I put symlinks in that directory, the Media tool will not recognize them.

If I  move an original MXF file into the directory, Media Tool will see the file as expected.

If I import that file into a bin or timeline, then move the MXF file back to the subfolder directory, and put a symlink in the Avid Mediafiles directory, the clip still plays back normally, and the "reveal file" functions takes me to the file in the subfolder directory.

This leads me to believe that Avid will follow symlinks, but Media Tool will not scan them and add them to the database.

Anyone else have experience with this?

Thanks,

DS

discussion clean framerate conversion

$
0
0

I'd like to start a discussion about the framerate conversion within media composer. Especially when changing the source playback rate. What alters the speed, but does no frame-blending. Technically it's no conversion on the video side. Every frame in the source is one in the timeline. But on the audio side you have to change the speed.

24.976 -> 25 fps = 95,904 % of original duration.

The ability to mix framerates in the timeline is a good starting point. When editing a documentary in the PAL area (25p) I get a lot of clips by worldwide archives with different framerates. I link the footage or import it to DNxHR, keep the source framerate and edit it to my timeline, where the timewarp does his job to match the timeline framerate. It's a quick and dirty style. Of course you get interframe-blending (or stutter).

When the source framerate and the timeline framerate are close, like 23.976 -> 25 it's a good way to alter the playback framerate in the clip's source settings. The clip duration alters as well, but you get a clean frame by frame result without frame-blending.

And yes, audio is treated as well. But simply by playback speed. (=pitch shift) Not by resampling.

Now the problems begin. When exporting an AAF to the record studio for mixing, media composer tumbles over it's own conversion. After AAF export the exported timeline has different durations than the original timeline. And some frame gaps. Same result when simply consolidate the timeline to another drive.

Next point, when editing a source altered clip (e.g. 23.976 -> 25) to the timeline it's displayed in timeline text as "CLIPNAME (25.00 FPS)". Same for audio, till you alter the pan of the audio in the mixer, then the (25.00 FPS) hint disappears. Fortunately the audio speed does not change, it's only a labeling bug I guess.

So wouldn't it be nice to convert before editing to the timeline?

I tried to transcode the source clip with the option "convert to project frame rate". Nowhere I found information if this option referes to source clip settings "Playback frame rate". Sometimes the conversion is done without frame blending, sometimes not. I can't predict it. (again 23.976 -> 25)

I think there are two options:
1. get the timeline audio work right. When media composer transcodes a clip with speed altered source. The new created audio file has to have the same frame count.

2. add an option to the consolidate/transcode. "convert to project frame rate" by what? preserve time (= frame blending) or preserve clean frames (= alter playback framerate like in the source settings)? And in case of altering playback framerate has the audio to be altered by speed change and pitch or by resampling and preserve pitch?

Phrase Find - control what gets indexed

Is there a way to limit phrasefind to only index certain bins?

I have a 100 hours of rushes that I want indexing. But I have 1000 hours of SFX that is pointless to be indexed.

Time for a "Replace Clip" button?

$
0
0

When working on effects heavy timelines, what slows me down more than anything is how long it takes to replace a clip which has effects associated with it.

With many effects I can step in an change the shot (which slows the Avid down in the processes).

But with things like Symphony CC effects, Motion FX, Frame Flex, LUTs, Audio Suite, levels and EQ, there's no straight forward way to replace a clip.

I've either got to save a preset and re-apply (ie: Audio Suite, Motion and CC) or write down the parameters and re-create the effect (ie: Audio levels, Frame Flex and LUTs).

I think there should be keystroke like the Replace Edit command to simply Replace the Clip but retain the associated effects.

Let me know your thoughts,

Jake

hi
im working with footage shot with sony fs7

3840/2160 pixels
1. what project should i open?
should it be 1080p/25 and then when i transcode mark frameflex?
2. when i link the files to avid i get a D1 (data) track
what is this track? do i need it later for colorgrading? (wich will be done in a color grading software)
i've read that i need to unlink the files, modify them and uncheck the D1 track and only the trancode them. is that a good idea?

Media Composer v8.9 - Launched 3rd August 2017

$
0
0

Great news! Media Composer v8.9 has launched and is available on the Download Center (login and password required), Application Manager v17.7 and My Avid Master accounts for people with eligible contracts.

The ReadMe and Whats New Documents can be found at this link.  (IMO it is well worth checking out the Whats New Document)

Installer: There is a Media Composer v8.9 Mac and v8.9 Win Installer. No patch installers with this release.
- New Nvidia Driver: Nvidia Driver v377.11 is supported with this release.

Changed in v8.9: The following has been changed in this release.
- If you are on a Windows 10 or a Windows 7 system and have a Quadro 4000,K4000, or M4000 graphics card, DMF jobs might fail, background transcode and render jobs might fail, and you might see artifacts in the User Interface.

*** Workaround: On the Windows 10 system, install NVIDIA driver v342.01. On the Windows 7 system, install NVIDIA driver v377.11.

Fixed in v8.9: The following have been fixed in this release.
- When your locale was set to German, Spanish, or Italian, a number of Media Composer dialog boxes displayed cut off text. Avid has made improvements when displaying these languages so the text is displayed properly. Also, a number of dialogs now include tool tips in the appropriate language. Avid will continue to make improvements with subsequent releases.
- In previous releases certain DVCPro clips could not be linked. Now they can be linked.
- If you changed the tape name of a clip, the timecode changed by the number of pre-charge frames.
- Left Margin setting did not apply to a new script.
- When “Interpolate Position” was disabled in Script Settings, Scripts were still imported with Interpolate Position enabled.
- (Mac) When exporting EDL using “To several files,” V1 track files were not created.

- You might have received an “Assertion failed” error when trying to export an empty sequence to XDCam.
- (Mac) Performing a background render ignored Source Settings LUT. Fixed in Media Composer v8.9
- You might have corrupted output in the record monitor when you opened the Effect Editor of a rolling title.

- (Mac) The application would crash when opening Effect Mode on clips with a TV Noise Horiz effect.
- (Mac) The editing application would crash while opening Effect Mode of an Animated Marquee title.
- Importing two tracks increased the clip duration by 1 frame.
- Changing local clip colors did not save if that was the only change you made.
- In some instances after performing a match frame, shift clicking to select a range of clips in the bin did not select the clips.
- When an AudioSuite rendered effect was removed from the sequence, you could not close the plug-in window.
(Japanese locale) Sequences with names that included a CR (carriage return) or LF (linefeed) displayed as offline in Interplay Access. With this release, newly created sequences will remove any CR or LF from the name. For older sequences, you can manually rename the sequence name to remove CR or LF.
- You might have received “Assertion Failed: minVBVLevel <= maxVBVLevel” errors when performing a mixdown of XDCAM media. Workaround: Enable the “Re-encode for XDCAM bitstream compliance” option in the Mixdown Video dialog.
- When in the Source Browser, linking to an XAVC Long GOP volume did not work properly. This has been fixed. The latest nablet-Sony XDCAM plug-in is required for XAVC Long GOP volume support.

Known Limitations: The following are known limitations in this release.

- When working with HiRes monitors, if you are in Frame View, playing back a thumbnail is not in the correct position while playing in bin.
- Occasionally, when working with media with effects or media where space, time or color adapters were rendered during transcode or video mixdown, you might see artifacts during playback or export. *** Workaround: Go to the Render Settings dialog and choose Disable GPU effects.
- While working in the Script Window, text operations (cut/copy/paste/delete/editing) can only be done in edit mode. See “Editing a Script” in the Help.
- When working with Panasonic LongG media, you might receive an “SFPlayConsumer Timeout” error if audio waveforms are enabled. *** Workaround: Turn off audio waveforms.
- Multicam editing with Panasonic LongG media is not supported with this release.
- Currently, when working with LongG media, you might see dropped frames when editing 4 streams. This might occur when playing from a single stream to multiple streams (and from multiple streams back to a single stream). The dropped frames usually display around the edit point (transition to a different stream).

How to obtain the Media Composer v8.9: The latest update to Media Composer is now available in My Avid Master Accounts, the Download Center and AppMan.

Avid will release a new Application Manager v17.8.  This public facing version will roll-up the changes from Application Manager v17.6 and v17.7 as well as add some additional security improvements.  Customers who have the “Auto-Update” feature enabled in AppMan will get the new version installed automatically.

Readme availabe here
http://resources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/Avid_Application_Manager_Read_me_17.8.pdf

Fixes include:
1.  Both signing in and signing out are significantly faster due to the different mechanisms used for Login to the Avid Everywhere Platform.   Please Note: General “Synchronization” time is still an on-going effort and is being addressed.

2. Additional security improvements have been included with this release of Application Manager.

Additional bugs addressed:
1.  AMPT-5773. In some instances, Application Manager might have installed MS C++ 2013 Redistributable (x64) software even if it was already installed.

2.  AMPT-5724. In some cases, Application Manager was not properly restored after waking your system from sleeping mode.

3.  AMPT-5718. (Mac) Application Manager CPU usage was high.

4.  AMPT-5633. Application Manager might have logged you out when in offline mode. You should now be able to run the application when you are offline instead of receiving a “Problem logging into account” error.

Dual 4K Monitors in Edit Effects mode bug

Hey all,

Just wanted to pass along some info.  I didn't see anything posted about this issue.

On Avid 8.9.0-.1, there's a bug.  When you switch over to edit an effect, like animatte, the composer window inverts colors.  Once you leave effect editing, it goes back to normal.  We swapped out the monitors for 1080p ones, and the problem went away.  We are working on the last iterations of the mac trash cans.

Just FYI
