Benchmarks for those who build their own computers.

This is for people who run MC on custom built computers, I will NEVER buy a qualified system, please do not reccomend or warn me of doing this.

I've been building my own computers and running Media Composer for about a decade now.  I get flawless performance, but lately ive been considering upgrading to a prosumer cpu such as a 6900k, 6950x, possibly Ryzen 1800x, or wait for future Skylake-X.

My current setup is intel 4790k @4.4ghz  32gb ram, asus z97 gryphon motherboard, nvidia 980ti. And running Media Composer 8.8.1, windows 10 home.

When I do a mixdown it looks like im getting 68% avg across 8 threads.  What average are you all getting?  Id be interested to know about kabylake 7700k, skylake 6700k, 6900k, 6950x, AMD Ryzen,  and other current cpus.

 

Im wondering if I built a computer with a 6950x @4ghz would Media Composer utilize all 10 cores/20 threads?  If so, that would be a substantial performance upgrade over these mainstream gaming cpu's.

Also im going to start paying close attention to how Media Composer uses all my cores while performing different tasks. Mixing down, rendering, exporting, importing, transcoding, etc.


Find script and scriptsync not working....

Im having an issue with the "find script" function.

What are your experience when you try and match from a line of dialogue in your timeline in to the script? Do you land on that exact "mark" og do you land somewhere earlier or later in that scene?

I have all lines of dialogue marked using scriptsync. Sometimes when I hit "find script" I will land two or three lines or sometimes i will land in the beginning of a scene.

This is a BIG issue for our workflow!

 

We are working in MC 2018.11.00 with scriptsync 2. Connected via nexis 18.11.0.9

2018.7 Decklink Mini Monitor does not work

Media Composer 2018.7 does not work with Decklink Ultrastudio Mini Monitor.  Downloaded the latest drivers and reinstalled them.

Is Media Log still available?

Using Cmd-X with yellow segment throws seq out of sync

I sometimes fail to notice which segement tool color is active and I'll hit cmd-X to remove something. If yellow is active this can throw tracks out of sync even with sync locks on. I thought toggling "Segment Track Sync Locks" setting on or off solves this, but it doesn't. Is there another setting that I'm forgetting about?

IMHO, there should be no way to throw tracks out of sync if the locks are on.

Adding handles to a vfx timeline for aaf export

Hello all,

Please excuse my english. Here is my problem. On a feature film, I have a timeline with only vfx shots I'd like the lab to send to the vfx studio. So my timeline is clean, just a V1, with markers on each shots for the lab to name the shots the right way.

They ask me to manually add the frames I need for handles, let say 10 frames in that case. I could consolidate the timeline and create a new one with the created clips, but i would loose all my markers. And if I export/import my markers on the new timeline, the 10 frames offset between each shot would probably place the markers later in the timeline on the wrong shots. I could also go with the trim mode and manually add the frames, but it's not efficient, and boring.

So is there a way of creating something like a duplicated timeline but with handles ? So that I can export an aaf to the lab that includes the handles ? Or a tool outside of avid in which I could import an aaf and that would add handles ?

Thank you for your ideas, as I have none !

Can't consolidate ProRes in an AAF

Here's a thing that's bugged me. If export an AAF with video (say, to go to Resolve), using the option to consolidate to a folder, if there is a ProRes file in sequence, it won't work and the error message says it will only work with 'Link to ...'. On the other hand, I can consolidate a sequence in the usual way, even if it contains ProRes media. Is this a licencing limitation or is it to prevent errors if the AAF is opened on a PC perhaps? Anyone?

Doing some bay upgrades. We’ve had the big knob mixers for quite some time. But they’re desk hogs and rats’ nests. 

Is there anything folks are using these days that can:

Output two sets of speakers

input two (ideally three) sources?

 

extra points for taking in a single embedded signal!  

Linking clips from bins to tracks in timeline

Hi all I am not sure this can be done but... is there a way you can designate a track in the timeline to a clip in the bin? That way when you select the clip in the bin your insert option in the timeline automatically highlights and aligns the tracks you have assigned to that clip? 

I have four audio clips per webisode from four different characters recorded at different times and they are to be cut into the timeline as though they are interacting with each other. Each recording runs for around 6mins, and I intercut each at an average of 15seconds. I have the first two audio tracks for Lil (named and coloured pink), the second two for Boo (named and coloured green), and so on and so on.

I am currently working in toggle view for the bin, 3 points editing the section I want, moving the clips to the associated tracks for the timeline, and putting them in. If I could automate 'the selecting which track the clip is going to because each clip is assigned a track' that would be amazing.

Hey all,

This feels like an issue that's others have encountered but for whatever reason I can't seem to find a solution on any of the other posts.

Avid Media Composer 7.0.3

Mac OS 10.8.5

DNX 36 1080 23.98 footage that's been created with Resolve from red files

After cutting footage together in my sequence, I try to export same as source and the quicktime file has only a black frame of picture. The audio is there but no image. If I export with any other codec I can see the image correctly but not with same as source. All effects have been rendered and I also tried a quicktime reference file but it also exported as a black frame.

I disabled Perian and have tried clearing renders and titles and recreating them but nothing has worked.

Anyone dealt with this issue before and if so, how did you solve it?

Combining Split Mono for editing

Hi there,

I do a lot of track-laying for myself. I have a good soundbank of SFX from various jobs and sound designing friends.

 

The problem I encouter the most is that the SFX I get from sound designers comes in split mono, such as:

Heavy Rain and Thunder L

Heavy Rain and Thunder R

 

A lot of the time I just import one channel and pan it to centre for a mono effect. But if there's a better way that I could combine them that would be great.

Hi all,

I am wrapping up a half-hour documentary and need some assistance. Most of the footage was imported at fairly low rez, some at DNxHD 45, some at DNxHD 75 and my question is this: what is the best way to up-rez this footage, shot with a Panasonic GH-3 in full HD 1080p 30fps .mov format? I seemed to remember that I used to make a copy of the final sequence, delete the media in the sequence, and re-import the media at a higher rez setting. Is this the correct way? It's been a while since I did this, so please bear with me. And I don't want to screw it up either.  Thanks for your help.

Sometimes MC won't close

Every so often when closing MC, it gives an error message that it has encountered a problem and has stopped working.   I'll force MC to close with Windows Task Manager.  I don't lose any saved work, but it's annoying and there seems to be no cause & effect pattern dictating when and why this happens.


Effect on Top (Graphic) Layer Only

I put an alpha channel graphic on V2 on top of a video clip on V1.   I want to add a transition (spin, swish pan, etc.) at the head of the graphic on V2 to animate the way the graphic comes onto the screen.   However, the effect also effects the bottom video layer.   I only want it to effect the graphic on V2.    Is there a way to make this work?   Thanks.

A bug? Some users cant click/scroll/close open bins

Its like that the bin you see, is not there, so when you try to move it nothing happens.

 

On one client this was resolved by upgrading to 2018.11, but now I have 2 clients that had that version, and I upgraded to 2018.12.1, but the problem is still there...

anyonye who have had this problem?

HW: z240, 4.2 ghz, 32 gb RAM Intel HD graphics

Floating License Server

Hi everybody.

Is it true that I can't have Media Composer and Media Composer Ultimate licenses on the same floating server? If so, why?? It seems to defeat the purpose of having a floating license server if you need one for each license type.

I've said this many times.

Please stop free space calculations.  Let the user disable it with a checkbox or console command.

The space calculation is 100% off.

I have more than enough room for the small amount of clips I want to transcode (43tb free) for this. 

I also tried bg transcode.

Worst case scenario is filling up my drive, is it reallly worth greying out a button for that?  You don't do this on export!
