Image Size Confusion

$

Wondering if someone can set me straight on an issue I don't understand.

I have some source clips with 1280 x 720 resolution

I create my project as HD720P, which sets the raster dimention to the same size. Then when I import the clip in to a bin and enable the image size column it says the size is 1920 x 1080.

I've tried selecting various resolutions in the options dialogue at the point of import but they all say 1920 x 1080 in the image size column after they've been imported.

Are my clips being up-rez? What am I missing?

Can't change volume of individual clip

Having a strange issue with a single clip. Has anyone experienced this?

I have an individual clip that I can't lower the volume on.

Whether I try with clip gain or keyframe the actual volume doesn't change. Not having this issue with any other clips.

I've tried re-editing the clip back in to the timeline but I keep getting the same issue.

Which file name does Media Composer use for AAFs?

So I've found myself in a situation where a distributor would like an XML export of my MC sequence.

My planned workaround was to export an AAF from MC, import the AAF into DaVinci Resolve and export the XML from there.

However, a portion of the audio files are failing to relink, probably because they weren't properly named. So I figure I should be able to rename the files in order to get them to link correctly.

Does anyone know if AAF's using the Link To method, use the files Tape ID when relinking? Or the Tape Name?

I'm finding that when I AMA link on my computer with 2018.12.1 & 2018.12.2 and then open up the same bin(s) other computers (that have 2018.09 and/or 2018.10 installed), the AMA links are always breaking. It only seems to happen when going from a newer version of Avid to an older (from 2018.12 and on).

Is anyone else having this issue? Can someone please look into this? This is proving to be very cumbersome to keep having to reestablish the AMA links.

Go To Previous/Next edit + single/dual roller edit

Hi,

Pressing A or S gets you to the previous/next edit.  However, at least in my present situation, it is only skipping to the video track's previous/next edit, but if both video & audio are edited together, pressing S skips to the end of the sequence.

Also, while I'm here, what's the general rule regarding single/dual roller editing?  I have a sequence laid out, and now moving along and tightening up.  However, it feels easier to dual roller all the time, trim each side appropriately, then move onto the next edit; but this seems to be pulling the subsequent edits, with their video & audio track footage, into weird un-cordinated contortions.  In other words, I maybe not utilising the two functions correctly.  In short, how to make finite trims and everything subsequent is kept in check, each edit then awaiting its turn to be finely adjusted?

Please advise,

DC

Integrating NewBlue Amplify & Media Composer 2018

I have upgraded to a new system, new Media Composer, and bought the production pack which includes New Blue Amplify (thinking that it would be at least a partial replacement for Avid FX which I no longer have access to).  So far I'm unimpressed, but want to make sure that the problem doesn't lie with me and my ignorance.

I cannot find a way to access Amplify from within Media Composer.  The effects list has the basic pre-installed NewBlue Elements/Essentials, etc.  but nothing to suggest "Amplify".

When I installed Amplify, it takes me to a window where I can open up a trial version, which opens up as "Titler Pro", apparently as a stand-alone program, i.e., not within the MC framework.  Even so, I have tried to activate it with my product key, but there is no obvious way to do this.  I'm just trying to create some simple transitions, and am finding myself missing Avid FX tremendously.  Am I missing something completely obvious?  Or is this production pack not going to be a good solution for me?

TIA.

AvidBackgroundServicesManager.exe - Bad Image

Windows updated itself to version 1809 when I wasn't looking and now loads of things are broken - Avid being one of them!

The error messages start during the boot-up routine when Avid Link tries to start. There is a whole series of the same type of message reporting that:-

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\FILENAME.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error Try installing the program again using the installlation media or contact software vendor. Error status 0xc000012f

I was getting similar errors for MS Office but have fixed with a re-installation, but I have tried re-installing MC and still get this error.

This is not my main edit machine, so it is not holding me up. it is an old-ish license MC 2018.11 on a former edit workstation nw relegated to occasional preview and legacy stuff. nevertheless still annoying the Windows update seems to have comprehensively screwed it up.

Anyone else?

AMT V3 questions

Hi All,
We are using the new AMT v3 SDK to create DNxHD files, and we found some isses and have some questions:

  • - Seems to be the new Avid SDK writes a different PictureCompression UL in the CDCI for DNxHD than the older SDK. Is it possible to write the same?
  • - We cannot write film metadata with the new SDK. Is this true? I was able to do this in the v2 SDK.
  • - Is it possible to add other metadata, like Scene, Take info into the rendered MXF files?

Thanks,

Gyula

TaggedValues in AMTv3

Hi,

Has anyone had any success with adding TaggedValues (ie UserComments) to a MAD that would then be in the exported AAF and MXF OP-Atom files?

It seems that in the MediaAssetDescription.xsd that this is possble - however I can't get it to work - (seems like it's just ignored) - using 4.4.23.10046 on Windows and macOS - so wondering what I could be doing wrong

Thanks

Nexis client, folders in workspaces occasionally locked on windows user level.

Dear Avid, Bob,

I see another case being opened for the latest project I'm doing but before doing so I wonder if you ever saw this before Bob?

About once a week a client of the Nexis storage, it can be a win10 editing client or win 2012r2 server like SGL all of a sudden produces a user rights access warning when you try to access a sub folder or parent folder while browsing either in an apllication or windows itself. Only resolution is to quit nexis client and start it again and that immediatly resolves it.

In the past 6 weeks I have become aware of it happening 4,5 times. So it's not a killer but still a bit worrying.

I've seen it happen with 7.3.2 client and 7.5. Weirdly never with 7.4. And because the 7.4 client accidentally did not include the fix  that could under circumstances cause the media indexer to BSOD, I wonder if that's related or just pure coincedence.

I already have a case open because 7.5 client causes BSOD's on 2 SGL Flashnet servers, probably because RSS is enabled on the 10G cards and wonder if I should open a case for this one folder user rights issue too.

Font issue with New Titler

The new title generator still isn't ready for Prime Time. Very finicky. That said, I have a specific problem:

I have fonts that have multiple faces: Heavy, Medium, Light, Bold, Oblique, etc. But in the new titler my only selections are Bold and Italics. I create a title and the Logo Police scream at me because I'm not using "Heavy" as the typeface.

Anyone have any ideas how to get the system to see the complete font? This sort of thing has happened in the past and there have been ways of modifying the fonts.

Thanks

Hi! I have a PC with the latest version of MC and Kone 3G card. The audio though is connected via the computer audio jack and not the Kona because of the distance goes via an extender. When I enable the video output on te Kona, the audio algo goes out on the Kona, it seems to be no way to make the Audio go out on the PC audio and the video on the Kona? Is there a way to do this?

problems in making copies

Hi!

I have copied the whole Avid Media Files -folder and the whole project folder and bins (avp + avb) to another hard disk. But for some reason some of the material is offline. When I check columns and "drive- column" then there I can read that some of the material is still on the old hard disk. Why? I did copy everything at the same time and same way.

Thank you for help!

.avb ID structure

$

Can anyone share the way .avb ID is structured? I have isolated the byte sequence in .avb files that make Avid bins unique. I can create new bins with unique IDs outside of Media Composer by writing random values to these bytes. But I have no clue how this ID is structured, if it's trully random or if there is some order to it.

To make it a bit more clear--each Avid bin has a unique ID. This is what prevents you from opening the attic bin and the parent bin at the same time. The bins may have different file names but if the ID is the same they are considered to be the same bin by Media Composer. This logic works well for attic retreaval in a way. But I'm writing automation tools and want to avoid creating invalid IDs.

Hi All,

I have a half hour music doc and a local audio wizard has agreed to mix it for me, so my question is: how do I export all of the audio tracks to his computer, and how do I get the media there as well?  Thanks!

MC Ultimate Trial won't launch

I am trying Media Composer Ultimate for the first time, having been an MC user for years, most recently version 7.0.2.  I was able to download the trial and it opened once or twice.  Now I find that it won't open with any of my choices.  It stops loading at "Initializing Settings" and gives me the message, "unspecified file: read error." How can I get past this, please? By the way, I'm on a MacBook Pro, running OS 10.13.6.

Relink 23.98 media to sequence cut in 24

$

There is a project shot in 24fps.  Editorial cut with 24fps dailies (Avid MXFs) in a 24fps Avid project.

Now, I have the same dailies, but they were converted through our transcoder to 23.98 Avid MXF.  The frame conversion was done "properly," keeping all frames so timecode matches between 23.98 and 24 flavors.

If Editorial hands me their Avid bin, I am having trouble relinking to my 23.98 dailies properly.

If I open their 24fps bin in my 23.98 project, and try to open their sequence, Avid will create a new 23.98 version of the sequence.  However, when it does that, it shifts the in and out timecodes in around a little in the new sequence, so the timecode ins and outs are sometimes 1-2 frames off.  So now when I relink to my 23.98 dailies, it is not frame accurate.

I believe Avid is converting the sequence to 23.98 incorrectly (or at least "not traditionally"); attempting to match the duration of the original piece by truncating frames, rather than maintaining the correct timecodes.

Anyone know how to fix this?

My current workaround is to open their 24p bin in a 24p project on my side, output an EDL, and bring that EDL in to a 23.98 project so that the timecodes remain the same.  Then it's fine.  But that's a lot of steps and I'm trying to avoid EDLs.

Also: As far as editorial working with 24 media and me working in 23.98 media, I have no choice. That's just the way our facility does things.
