Timeline search broken in 2018.12.6?

For some reason timeline search stopped working for me for certain words in 2018.12.6. I used to be able to search for "scratch" (to find scratch VO) but that word isn't working now. I have the settings for it set to search for all occurrences. Any ideas?


playback stuttering sometimes

Timeline: 3 video tracks, 5 audio tracks video material 1080/50 from Sony HDR-CX740 and stills - all material is linked, not imported.

I am editing a travel film and have already done 3 sequences each between 3 and 9 minutes long.

On this seq. I have done about 3 minutes and now added some more clips, which during playback stop and after a second or so jump and continue playing. 

On the TC1 I see a red line at these places. What does the red line mean?

I have tried to adjust the media cache with no results. the "desired video memory" is now on 19 GB The RAM is running on 70% pretty stable and the GPUis at 10 %.

I have also tried and deleted the audio on a place where it stutters with no improvement.

I have also ran the clips through Proderalin to stabilize them and that  has no influence on stuttering.

I have also made a new sequence and put the additional clips (54) in and still stutters. deleted all but the first 2 clips , still stutters.

 

Any ideas ?

Tracking How Long a Sequence is Worked On

Hi all,

I have a new client that is looking to be able to track how long sequences are worked on for their own client billing purposes, is there a feature built into Avid that tracks how long sequences are open etc?

  a ver si alguien puede ayudarme para actualizar mi interface Mbox (es el de 2 canales), ya que tengo una mac book pro que tenia mac OS 10.9 pero hace unas semanas atras la actualize a macos Mojave y cuando acceso a . la interface me dice que tengo que actualizar la interface MBOX, alguien sabe o me puede guiar para hacerlo o que tenga algun tutorial, por favor ayudenme o que me guien si tienen algun tutorial mucho se los voy agradecer de antemano, gracias

Frameflex Z-Rotation to get 16:9 to 9:16

I was unable to rotate 3840x2160 90° to 2160x3840.
While Frameflex rotates the Image as expected it crops parts of it no matter of what settings I've tried.
Project is set to 2160x3840.
It could be done correctly if the scale-slider would have a wider range. But I did find no way to do it.
So I did what was suggested elsewhere and used DaVinci Resolve to simply rotate my footage by one klick.

If there is a solution within MediaComposer, please tell me. If not, please fix it.
It's not for a niche it's a social media format.

I need playback to stop like it used to when i "mark in/out" :/

i have the latest 2018 version.

and the playback doesn't stop when i mouse click to mark in or out. 

i think it's a new feature, but i cannot work like this.

any ideas?

Important Update on Upcoming Creative Tools Price Adjustments

We wanted to give you a heads up on some important changes regarding the pricing of our Creative Software products.  We are announcing that we have adjusted several of the prices of these offerings effective July 1, 2019.   Some prices have increased, some have stayed the same and some have decreased.   

As many of you know, the entire technology industry is going through a major shift from perpetual licenses to a new business model focused on subscription.  This directional change is a positive shift for many users that are interested in more flexible and affordable payment options and only paying for those features, functions or services they need to access.  Avid is always looking at ways to improve efficiencies in this area and while we have maintained the same pricing since our subscription offers started over 5 years ago, that will be changing.  We continue to deliver new innovations, as well as new ways of enabling our customers to do their jobs faster and easier. This includes the recent announcements of the 2019 releases of Media Composer, Pro Tools and Sibelius. 

A major focus of our analysis was on the shift from perpetual to subscription models and as a result we have increased the number and appeal of cross-grade offers for those that are interested in shifting from perpetual to subscription.  We have also increased the number of payment options for subscription, including pay up front annually, commit annually but pay monthly and pay as you go, monthly. In addition, we have decided that customers currently subscribing to Media Composer, Pro Tools and Sibelius will not have a price increase, however they must continue to keep their subscription current in order to maintain their existing price.

Please know that Avid understands the impact and implication of price increases and this is not a decision we take lightly or without significant analysis and thought.  For those of you that are currently on Perpetual Licenses, the increase ranges from 0-33% on new licenses depending on the product and type of license.  As an alternative to renewing at the new pricing, there are incentives for you to cross-grade from your current perpetual license to subscription, like decreased pricing and additional functionality, depending on the product. We would highly recommend that you look at those options as you consider your next renewal.

A few answers to questions you will probably want to know….

1. WHEN DOES THIS PRICE CHANGE TAKE EFFECT?
         The new pricing will take effect July 1, 2019.


2. WILL AVID STILL OFFER BOTH PERPETUAL AND SUBSCRIPTION OFFERINGS?
      Yes, we will continue to offer perpetual licenses for our Creative Products, but subscriptions are the preferred software licensing model and as such will have more benefits.


3. WILL AVID STILL SUPPORT DONGLES AND ILOKS?
      Yes, Avid will continue to support dongles and iLok for managing licenses.


4. WILL AVID STILL OFFER UPDATE PLAN REINSTATEMENTS?
         Yes. For specific eligibility please check with your Avid Account representative or local reseller.


5. IF THE UPDATE PLAN FOR MY PERPETUAL LICENSE EXPIRES AFTER JULY 1, 2019, CAN IT BE RENEWED BEFOREHAND AT THE OLDER PRICE?
   Yes, you can renew the Update + Support Plan prior to its expiration date, since this will simply extend the end of your current plan another year. Renew prior to July 1, 2019 to take advantage of current pricing


6. CAN I PURCHASE MULTIPLE UPDATE PLAN RENEWALS NOW OR ARE WE LIMITED TO A CERTAIN AMOUNT?
    You can renew for multiple years while an Update + Support Plan is active, but they must be purchased prior to July 1, 2019 to take advantage of previous pricing.


7. IF I PURCHASE AN UPDATE PLAN RENEWAL NOW FROM MY RESELLER, HOW DOES MY PLAN GET EXTENDED?
 If you purchase a renewal from a reseller you will be given a renewal code which you can use any time before your plan’s expiration date. If you purchase a renewal on the Avid webstore, it will automatically update your
Pro Tools, Media Composer or Sibelius product and license.

8. IF MY SUBSCRIPTION EXPIRES AFTER JULY 1, 2019, CAN IT BE RENEWED BEFOREHAND AT THE OLDER PRICE?
 Customers who purchased subscriptions prior to July 1, 2019 can continue to renew their subscriptions at the original (current) price.


9. WILL AVID CHANGE PRICING ON AVID.COM?
      Yes, and pricing will be the same for our customers on the Avid webstore and through resellers.

10. WILL THE EDUCATION PRICING CHANGE?

     No, Educational pricing for the Creative Products will remain the same.

Export as Quicktime Movie -2GB file size limit

Export as Quicktime Movie gives me the best (compared to Quicktime Reference) and acceptable results when burnt to DVD, but the films I have are much larger than 2 GB. When I try export longer films I get:

"Error exporting file to disk. The file can not be created because it would exceed the two gigabyte file size limit. Export a shorter duration or change your export settings".

How can I avoid this problem? Can I avoid this problem in Avid or shall I export the film in segments and use a program to join them together before I encode to Mpeg2? Is there such a program? Or shall I solve it some other way? (The background is this: I have had problems with blockage in dark areas of the DVD when I use qtref export and this blockage disappears when I burn a qtmov file).

AMA Plug-in Error

I am trying to open a sequence I created a few years ago and keep getting this error whenever I try to play it:

"Exception: Failed to get sample position from the AMA plug-in"

When I originally created the sequence, I consolidated the shots to DNxHD and deleted the AMA version of the clips.  I can Match Frame to the shots and they are there--I can play them and cut them in to a new sequence.  I have checked every bin in the project and there no AMA linked clips.

composer window fonts changed (2019.6)

Somehow I've managed to change the font of the clip name and sequence name in the composer windows in 2019.6

Anyone know how to change it back. Currently it looks to be a script style font.

The fonts in the bin are default open sans.

The timeline text changed too, but I've managed to reset that by choosing default setup from the timeline menu.

MC 2019 Workspace bar?

Have just installed Avid MC 2019. The options on the new Workspace bar; Edit, Color, Effects, Audio don't change the workspace at all for me. For example, hitting color doesn't open the color corrector, Effects doesn't open the effects palette. Am I missing something?

MC 2018.12.6 Marker Copy/Paste broken

Hello,

one of my assistent editor made me aware of it. Normaly she sets a marker on a subclip, groups this subclip with another one and copy/pastes the marker on the group clip. So then she has the same marker on the subclips and on the groupclips. Timecode is identical.

In 2018.9 it works and in 2019.6 it works too again.

Audio Plugin Hilarity

Hi All,

Trying to create a 'brickwall' limiter setting to chuck on sports commentary to stop it peaking when they get really excited and to be able to keep the volume up whilst they're talking quietly. I'm using Izotope 6 Maximizer which seems to do the job well and monitoring the effect in the next insert (on the master bus) with MVMeter as it can do PPM levels. Only problem is it works really intermittently - sometimes it's fine and then it will just stop having any effect at all. Have also tried the same settings in a dual mono tack and it does the same - you get the settings right, come back to it and it doesn't seem to work at all. Is there an issue overall with audio in MC 8.6.5 ?

Also i'm trying to get two plug in windows up at the same time (the limiter and the PPM meter) is this possible ?

It's really slow going back and forth between the plugins.

Any sports editors out there ? What's your audio workflow ?

Project Resolution and Offline/Online Workflow

Hi There,

 

Looking for some guidance, and wondered if I might be able to get some help.

 

I'm cutting a short, we have ProRes Proxies for the Offline which are at the same resolution that the film was shot in (4K).

 

These work, but I'm having a tough time getting decent, consistent playback that does not get choppy. This is likely a product of the fact I'm working on an older mid-2015 machine. 

 

I think I may be better off creating some 1080p proxies to work with instead. I have a couple questions related to this...

 

Firstly, all the rushes and audio have been synced up already using the 4K proxies. Is there a way I can keep these synced sequences when reconnecting to new 1080p proxies, or will this have to be done from scratch?

 

Secondly, when it comes to the final online - is there anything I should be aware of when linking to the 4K camera files (i.e. how does this work when going from a 1080p offline sequence, to a 4k online one?)

 

Any help/expertise would be greatly appreciated.

Media Composer v2019.6 Source playback in and out stops playback

Media Composer v2019.6 , load a video into the source monitor in Media Composer. Playing the clip in the source when you try and mark in "i" on the keyboard or "o" on the keybaord mark out the playback stops. Brand new install on High Sierra no previous user serttings for Media Composer used.


Stabilize effects — very disappointing

Am I alone in thinking that Media Composer's stablize effects are just not up to the job? Yes, they can improve a wobbly shot, but not as much as they should. I'm talking about both "stablize" and "region stablize" in the effect palette. The other day I was working beside an editor with Final Cut Pro. I was playing around with the parameters to reduce the movement in a shot, and he was surprised at how ineffective Avid's tools were. I sent him the shot and he was able to treat it in FCP's "tripod" mode and the result was excellent — whereas MC left the shot still far from stable and introduced a subtle flexing/stretching motion which is not acceptabe when you're working to broadcast standards. I've also seen much better results from Adobe Premier.

I know there are various plug-ins like ProAv which can address this problem, but these are expensive, and frankly MC should do better. Avid claim that MC is the gold standard of NLE software, but after using it for 15 years I'm surprised how poor it is in some areas, and how full of bugs, evidenced by tens of thousands of posts on these forums.

I still love Media Composer, when everything goes right. But sometimes it frustrates me to hell! For a mature application, MC falls well short of what I expect and pay for, and I wish Avid would address some of the issues instead of concentrating its efforts on marketing gimmics.

Laptop for occasional Media Composer use

Hi,

I'm looking for a new PC laptop for very occasional Media Composer use.

I spend my days editing on my big (and very non-mobile) workstation as a daily driver. It's solid and where I like to edit. Very occasionally I need to go on a plane or a boat and watch some rushes or some edits, and I need a laptop for this rare use-case.

I'm very nervous about buying a laptop that isn't qualified by Avid, as I've had seen so many Avid issues in the past with non-spec hardware. But as I was scrolling through the qualified Windows laptop list today, I couldn't find one that was recent and qualified that wasn't total overkill both in price and specs for my use-case.

I exclusively cut with transcoded, offline media. My sequences are almost always DNx36 media with few or no effects other than the occasional color correction, and a few million audio dissolves :) Restricting myself to the qualified laptop list locks me into a budget and spec that is very difficult to justify given this 'light load'.

Can anyone help me? I want a laptop that is 'safe' to use with media composer - by which I mean won't suddenly not playback media - but doesn't cost a fortune. I want a 4k screen as I like looking at really tiny text, and a stylus as I also dabble in graphic art.

 

Has anyone had any success with any laptops that meet these criteria. Are there any supported hardware specs other than the qualified laptop list?

 

 

 

Delay Render

I am working on a plug-in where the data required to render any given frame will not be available for a few seconds after the effect is initialised. I can handle this in the render call but once a frame has been "rendered" render is not called again unless some aspect of the effect changes. Is there any way to effectively keep the frame as "unrendered" until the data is available? Obviously I can return an error from either the BeginFrame or Render calls but this results in the nasty black error monitor.

Avid Link Memory Leak?

Hey everyone. Having some concerns with Avid Link. I noticed while editing in 2018.12.1 that my timeline was sluggish and noticed in my system resource manager that Avid Link was using a considerable amount of memory. Has anyone experienced this?

i did a clean uninstall and reinstall of both MC and Avid Link with no obvious difference.

Also, none of the tabs on Avid Link work except for the product tab, which fortunately allowed me to add my system ID info to launch 2018.12.1.

 

Any thoughts?

2019.6 releases - documentation questions

Now that the 2019.6 releases for mediacentral cloud ux, mediacentral production management, and newsroom management have been released, I have some questions/points about the state of documentation:

 

1] There is no 2019.6 what's new guide for production management. It links to the 2018.6 version.

 

2] There is no upgrade guide for cloud ux. Is this forthcoming, or is the product intended to be a clean install from scratch for this release? 

 

3] The media composer/interplay compatibility document currently lists Composer 2019.6 as Not Supported for MCPM 2019.6, so this release of MCPM has no qualified clients?
